Hiking trails

Surrounded by extensive wooded areas, the municipality of Spiesen-Elversberg rightly bears the name "Wohngemeinde im GRÜNEN" (residential municipality in the GREEN). In and around Spiesen-Elversberg you can go on wonderful excursions; whether on foot, by bike or on horseback.

Well and boundary stone path

Together with the local history association, the municipality of Spiesen-Elversberg has built several hiking trails. They have been laid out in such a way that circular paths can be found from several parts.

The boundary stone path

This trail leads past the historical boundary stones from 1756, which marked the border between the county of Saarbrücken-Nassau (1123-1801) and the duchy of Zweibrücken on the one hand, and between Nassau-Saarbrücken and the dominion of Von der Leyen (1456-1801) on the other. From 1816 onwards, the border was marked between the kingdoms of Prussia and Bavaria.

It is also worth visiting the local recreation area Galgenberg with its observation tower and rose garden. From the Galgenbergturm you can see the Schwarzenbergturm in Saarbrücken and the Schaumberg in Tholey when visibility is good.

Local recreation area Ruhbachtal

The Zweckverband Naherholungsgebiet Ruhbachtal (local recreation area Ruhbachtal special purpose association), to which the town of Sulzbach/Saar, the municipality of Spiesen-Elversberg and the town of Friedrichsthal have joined forces, has for years set itself the declared goal of protecting, maintaining and developing the Ruhbachtal local recreation area through nature conservation and landscape management measures, thus ensuring that the people of our region have a natural and healthy environment in which they can find relaxation from the noise and hectic pace of everyday life. The beautifully laid out hiking trails serve the purpose of recreation and relaxation, on which the interested walker "en passant" can discover the diversity of nature, the flora and fauna.

Mühlental - Spieser Mill - Glashütte Pond

A beautiful path also leads for example through the Mühlental to the Rohrbacher Weiher. Here it is worth taking a break at the Spieser Mühle. At the beginning of the 16th century Heinrich Schwarz from Kusel received permission from the abbot of Wadgassen to settle in Spiesen as a miller. The mill in the valley started its operation and sank with the village in the turmoil of the Thirty Years War. In the 18th century the Spieser Mühle was also a sawmill. Towards the end of the 19th century, the Spieser Mühle was no longer able to withstand the competition from steam and later electricity powered mills. The Spieser Mühle was closed in 1898. The municipality of Friedrichsthal built its new waterworks on the site. For a long time now, leisure and recreation have also been the main focus here.
